Gir National Park is one of the popular forest and wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, which is renowned as a home of Asiatic lions. Gir is the only natural habitat of world popular Asiatic Lions. This sanctuary was established in 1965. It was considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. In 1974, it was declared a National Park and National Reserve.

The population of this sanctuary is 523. The Sanctuary is located in Junagadh, about 43 kilometres from Somnath. The Gir forest, spread over 1,412 square kilometres, which is one of the largest track of dry deciduous forest in the world. There are about 7 rivers flows in this area Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Raval, Godavari and Machhundri.
Apart from Asiatic Loins, it is also the home of various species such as jungle cats, golden jackals, Indian mongoose, Indian palm civets, ratels, desert cats, striped hyenas, rusty-spotted cats etc. you may also find Blackbucks as well.
Here you have lots of option to do, enjoy the Loin Jeep Safari, there are seven designated tourist trails in the sanctuary which is open to the jeep safari. If you are exploring the Jungle with your own vehicle then you must take a guide or forest guard. Also explore Crocodile Breeding farm, which is located about 10 kilometres away from Hiran River. You can also enjoy the Loin camp safari, which is located about 3 kilometres away from the sanctuary, arranged by Forest Department.
