Pondicherry - Abode of Sri Aurobindo

The name Pondicherry has been taken from the Tamil word Puducherry - its meaning is 'the new settlement'. It was a French settlement that comprised Pondy, Yanam, Karaikal, and Mahe. Amazing is the fact that different districts of Pondicherry fall under different states. The capital Pondicherry is located in the state of Tamil Nadu at a distance of around 200 km from Chennai. While Karaikal is also a part of Tamil Nadu, Mahe is located in Kerala, and Yanam is in Andhra Pradesh.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded in 1920 when Sri Aurobindo reached Pondicherry. The ashram houses the Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and his mother. The Pondicherry Museum, Bharthi Museum, Bharthidasan Memorial Museum are the other tourist spots in the union territory. Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus built in the Gothic style is one of the most beautiful churches in Pondicherry.

Tourist Attractions in Pondicherry

French Fort Louis -  In the year 1709, the French Fort Louis in Pondicherry was constructed. One of the most popular tourist place in Pondicherry.

Aayi Mandapam - The Aayi Mandapam in Pondicherry is one of the wonderful monuments of the city. Especially in the evenings, the Aayi Mandapam looks beautiful with the help of sparkling illuminations.

Ananda Ranga Pillai Museum - Amongst the notable historic edifices dotting the union territory's landscape, the Ananda Ranga Pillai Museum in Pondicherry holds a special place.

Aurbindo Ashram - It is the most visited tourism site of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. It was built in the year 1926. The great thinker was so popular in this part of the world that till today.

Back water lakes & Gardens - There are back water lakes and gardens which attracts most of the tourists. They are - Botanical Gardens, The Government Park or the Bharati Park etc.

19th Century Light House - The 19th Century Light House in Pondicherry stands pretty on the Red Hills in Gorimedu.

Ariyankuppam Archaeological Site - The Ariyankuppam Archaeological Site, is a historically eminent site that holds a special place in Pondicherry's history.

French War Memorial -The French War Memorial in Pondicherry has a strong French connection.

Karaikal Beach - It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Pondicherry.
