About Meghalaya

Overview

Meghalaya is an another North East seven sister state of India. The name Meghalaya means “the abode of clouds”. Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya. This city is known as “Scotland of the East”. The state is popular and famous for its beautiful green hill stations and lakes. Earlier this state was a part of Assam where Shillong was the capital city of Assam. But in the year 1972,  Meghalaya became a new State. There are three famous tribal hills – Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills. The main language that is spoken in the state is Khasi. There are also other languages like Garo, Naga, Boro, Assamese, Dimasa, Karbi, Nepalis, Rabha etc. Most of the people are Christian and 80% Christianity are found here.  The world highest rainfall occurs in Cherrapunji which is located in the state of Meghalaya.

A Special permit is required for the Foreigners to enter the areas of this state. One of the oldest Golf courses in India is the Shillong Golf Course. This is the most popular tourist destination of India and mainly for those people of nature lover. The tourism of Meghalaya offers you all types of adventurous tours, hill station tour, mountaineering, rock climbing, trekking etc.

Umiam Lake

Umiam lake is a picturesque lake which offers all those facilities like paddle boats, sailing boats, cruise-boats, water-scooters and speedboats. One of the most popular tourist destinations of Meghalaya.

Shillong

Shillong is the capital city of the state Meghalaya. It is one of the hubs for tourist destination centers. There are many attractions in this city.  Some main attractions are Elephanta falls, Shillong Peak, Lady Hydari Park, Ward's Lake, Cathedral Catholic Church, Golf Course, Spread Eagle Falls, etc.

Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is one of the wettest place where World’s highest rainfall occurs. Locally Cherrapunji is known as Sohra.  It is a land of breathtaking beauty and exotic people. It is a popular tourist spot and natural beauty of the earth.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls is also known as the seven sister fall and also the tallest plunge waterfall in India. There is a small story behind the name of this falls.

Mawsynram

It is a village in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The main attractions are- Mawjymbuin Cave, massive Shivalinga and other sightseeing.

Mawlynnong Village

It is a small and one of the cleanest village all over India. It is 90kms approx. from the city Shillong. Keeping the village clean is an age old tradition.

How to Reach Meghalaya

  1. By Air - Umroi, is a small airport which is 35 km from Shillong operated from Kolkata and Agartala.
  2. By Rail -   The state does not have any railway station. But there are other Railway station nearby the state. The Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest Railway Station, which is well connected with other states and cities.
  3. By Road - Local transport like state bus, taxi and other private cars are available. It is connected to Silchar in Assam, Aizawl in Mizoram and Agartala in Tripura through National Highways.
